CBMI 2008
For something that has kept me busy for the past few months, it’s amazing I haven’t written anything about it yet right here, on my weblog. A couple of months ago, I finished my bachelor thesis research on the subject of video browsing. I picked an interesting research subject, built a paper about it. It was very well received and my teachers suggested I’d try to get it published.
I did, and it got accepted for presentation at the Sixth International Workshop on Content-Based Multimedia Indexing (CBMI 2008). It took some rewriting, with the help of some co authors of course, but the revised paper will be in the proceedings of this conference.
Yesterday, I was pretty happy I didn’t brag about anything or raised any expectations, because it was looking more and more like I was never going to get here at all. A defect in the railway tracks, combined with the enduring bus strikes, caused me to get stuck in Enschede for well over an hour. Those of you who followed me on Twitter will know that after that I had to suffer another delay due to getting stuck behind people on the escalators.
Luckily, it all turned out right in the end. I was able to catch my flight (partly due to some serious rally racing by my mother, thanks for that) and have arrived safely in my small, but decent room on the campus of Queen Mary University of London. After a very short night’s sleep, I am looking forward to my first scientific conference. I will keep you posted!
Sprouts: a Rails developer’s best friend for Flex
It has been quite a few months since I had my first encounter with developing Adobe Flash / Flex applications. Today I got back at it to do some tweaking on my VideoTrees prototype and I noticed again how much I love using Sprouts for it. I just have to share this with you.

Ik kan bijna niet geloven dat het alweer anderhalf jaar geleden is dat de iPhone werd aangekondigd. Een speeltje dat ik toen al direct wilde hebben, ook al was het nog niet uit. Helaas bleek Apple andere plannen te hebben. De iPhone werd eerst alleen in de VS gereleased, en dan nog met een schandalige exclusiviteitsdeal met AT&T ook. Dan maar even iets anders.
Lost generation
Dit gedicht vond ik allereerst in een post van Liang, maar toen had ik niet het geduld om het filmpje helemaal af te kijken. Wat een misser, want het is echt een bijzonder gaaf uitgevoerd gedicht en zeker de 104 seconden van je leven die het je kost om het te kijken waard.
EEG pret
Omdat Lieke nog mannelijke proefpersonen tekort kwam voor haar afstudeeronderzoek, zat ik afgelopen vrijdag ineens met eenenzestig electroden op mijn hoofd en een paar op mijn borst naar plaatjes van blote vrouwen en bijna afgehakte tenen te kijken. Via twee electroden op mijn arm werd ik ondertussen ge-‘zapt’, waarbij ik telkens aan moest geven hoe veel pijn dat deed. Het doel van dit alles? Kijken of er een verband bestaat tussen de emoties die in dit geval door afbeeldingen worden oproepen en de perceptie van pijn.
Dat een dergelijk verband bestaat lijkt me heel waarschijnlijk, en dat is straks vast terug te lezen in het afstudeerverslag van Lieke. Ondertussen was het natuurlijk vooral heel cool om te zien hoe de afgebeelde hersengolven van de EEG zichtbaar veranderden als ik met mijn ogen knipperde of mijn spieren bewoog. En zeg nou zelf, het ziet er ook nog eens heel sexy uit zo met zo’n muts:

With its latest update, Apple added some new features to their Mail.app that I think are more than worth mentioning. New in Apple’s Mail application is the ability to compose notes and tasks. Of course you could already write tasks in iCal, which worked fine, but Mail.app can do more.
