Reverting Leopard’s Dock

Although I admit I don’t particularly dislike the new “shelf”-style Dock in Leopard, the alternative dock I wrote about earlier does look very sleek and it made me wonder: can you also use it horizontally?

It turns out, you can! As this post by Andrei Drynov explains, it takes just one line to set a simple preference. and turn this:

Dock (glass)

into this:

Dock (no-glass)

To do this, open your favourite Terminal application and enter:

defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean YES; killall Dock

This sets the no-glass property of the Dock to true and restarts the Dock to reflect the changes. Great!

*update*: Leopard is still due for tomorrow, but someone has already turned this into a tool :)

It’s actually not my tool, but Matthias Gansrigler’s. Anyway, it’s working just fine for me. Did you try again?

defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean YES; killall Dock

Is this a permanent or temp modification?
I really want this sidebar-style as a default at every startup ;-)

    TIA!

  10. Michel says:

It’s permanent. Obviously, the effect is reversible if desired. To restore the dock to its defaults, a simple

defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean NO; killall Dock

    does the trick :)
